The heart-felt speech that actress Gina Rodríguez gave after winning a Golden Globe® for Best Actress in a TV Series, Musical or Comedy touched Latinos everywhere and made her a household name. Rodríguez spoke of her family and culture: “Thank you to my mom and my dad for telling me to dream big and to never stop dreaming… This award is so much more than myself. It represents a culture that wants to see themselves as heroes.”

Her breakthrough performance came in 2012 as the star in the movie Filly Brown. Soon after, The CW offered her the lead in Jane the Virgin. “When Jane came into my life, as an actress I was given the opportunity to fly in my craft; as a Latina, the chance to portray a character not yet seen in American television; and as a Latina who grew up in America, the gift to represent a demographic that needs to be seen,” she told Nexos Latinos recently.

Rodríguez in fact turned down a role in Devious Maids to bring a different type of story to the small screen and help give a different perspective of Latinos in the U.S. “Jane is a girl, just like any other girl. She can relate to any woman; to make that woman a Latina allows the industry to tap into a culture that truly contributes to American society and in return deserves to be recognized. I feel beyond blessed I get to be that girl. Jane is a role model to the youth and I hope I can be more like her because it couldn’t hurt to have more characters like that in society.”
