Selena Gómez star of Wizards of Waverly Place, enchants us with her new album and her outlook on life.

Eighteen-year-old Mexican-American singer Selena Gomez, whose albums have sold millions of copies worldwide, is making a graceful transition into young womanhood. She was named after “The Queen of Tejano,” but grew up listening to Britney Spears, whom she remembers seeing in concert: “We were in the nosebleeds with my cousin. I got the T-shirt and glow-stick and I just remember it being the highlight of my life! I felt like I was on cloud nine!” Now, she plans to do a tribute to that seasoned young star on her upcoming concert tour: “I want it to be a like a big rave — a G-rated rave! I want it to feel like a party. I’m going to do different covers and I just want it to be really fun,” she told Ryan Seacrest.

Like Spears, Selena has starred in a number of successful Disney productions, including the film Ramona and Beezus and the TV series The Wizards of Waverly Place. She has contributed to Disney soundtracks like Tinker Bell, Another Cinderella Story and Princess Protection Program. But similarly, she is moving on: “I owe a lot to Disney Channel, I really do, but I feel like it’s been my high school so I think it’s time to graduate.” In 2009, the young singer formed her own band, Selena Gomez and The Scene. Their first two albums, Kiss & Tell and A Year Without Rain, were both certified gold. Many songs became very popular with young music fans, particularly “Naturally,” which went platinum.

Selena released the first single from her new album, Otherside. The song, “Who Says?” bolted to #10 in its first week, selling over 115,000 units. The song sends a powerful message to young women. Speaking with E! Online, she said “Girls my age tend to question themselves a lot. They tend to dress and be what other people want them to be…There are moments every day when I feel insecure and not good enough. I hope that the song really inspires my fans to embrace who they are.” When it became evident that her listeners were responding to her message, she Tweeted her gratitude: “You are all the best, the love you have shown ‘Who Says?’ is amazing.”

Selena and The Scene kick off their summer concert tour on July 24, three weeks after the opening of her newest movie, Monte Carlo.
